The Fade List
Where the market has overpaid — nine names we are letting other clubs draft this August.

Every August the industry publishes its apologies in advance. The latest survey of the expert community — two dozen players the professionals are avoiding at cost — reads like a wine list of famous names, and the reasons are unusually concrete this year. We have distilled it, alongside the ADP market, into the nine fades we actually intend to honor at the table.
The expensive ones
- Christian McCaffrey, RB, SFADP 6.6Over 400 touches last season, a declining yards-per-carry, and an age-30 campaign ahead. The résumé is a museum piece; the price assumes it is not.
- Jaxon Smith-Njigba, WR, SEAADP 5.4A career year priced as the new normal, attached to Sam Darnold's limitations and a changing scheme. Top-five picks should not require a repeat of the best season of a man's life.
- Justin Jefferson, WR, MINADP 11.7The talent is not in question; Kyler Murray's downfield accuracy is. Coming off the worst finish of his professional career, the floor is lower than the name suggests. We would rather be a round late than a legend early.
- Ashton Jeanty, RB, LVADP 15.1Playing in an offense the projections grade among the league's worst, with a new regime on top — though PFF's line rankings, for the record, are kinder to the Raiders' blocking than the narrative is. The fade is about the offense, not the guards. Volume is king only when the throne is stable.
The fashionable ones
- Rashee Rice, WR, KCADP 14.8Taken at 3.01 in this week's expert mock — roughly a round ahead of his own market. Injury history, off-field risk, and a Kansas City offense the avoid-lists describe as structurally broken. The chalk is chalk for a reason; it is also priced like it.
- Breece Hall, RB, NYJADP 34.6A groin injury the beat expects to linger, inside a Jets offense in transition under Frank Reich with Geno Smith at quarterback. Fell to 3.11 in the expert room for a reason.
- Malik Nabers, WR, NYGADP 27.3Working back from a torn ACL and meniscus — three-quarter-speed team drills as of mid-August. The experts' quiet worry: the real Nabers may not appear until late this season. Round-three prices offer no discount for patience.
The rookies everyone loves
- Jeremiyah Love, RB, ARIADP 27.9The third overall pick is nursing a high-ankle sprain and sharing a room with James Conner and Tyler Allgeier. We are believers in the player — see Article IV — and skeptics of the August price.
- Quinshon Judkins, RB, CLERB18 costComing off a season-ending fibula injury, running behind a rebuilt line, into one of the league's tougher opening schedules — with a quarterback room split, literally, between Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders.
A fade is not a verdict on the player. It is a verdict on the price.
The proper reading of this list: any of these men may finish brilliantly, and several will. But drafts are won at the margin between cost and outcome, and in late August the cost side of these nine ledgers has stopped leaving room for the ordinary disappointments of a football season. Let another club pay retail.
